ADAMS - Loretta M. Adams
- Services were held for Loretta Marlene Adams at Swanson Funeral Home,
February 15. Rev. Charles Kiser officiated. Mrs. Adams, 64, died February
11. She was born February 5, 1933 and attended Hamtramck Public Schools.
Later, she graduated from the Detroit School of Commerce with a secretarial
degree. She worked at Family Services in Hamtramck and in Center Line.
Mrs. Adams' realized her lifelong dream in May 1996, when she graduated
from Wayne State University with a degree in Sociology. She is survived
by her husband, Nathaniel; daughter, Denise; sons, Nathaniel and Derek;
grandchildren, Derek, Monea and Alexis; brothers, Lorenzo and Clifford;
sisters, Linda and Donna; and many others. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery.

ALBERT - Edward Albert
- Services were held for Edward Albert on Thursday, March 27, at the Dexter
Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home Inc. Bishop Phillip Pulliam officiated.
Mr. Albert, 68, died March 21. Born on April 4, 1928 in Birmingham,
Alabama, Mr. Albert was one of nine children. He moved to Detroit
in 1949 after serving with the U.S. Navy. He married Thelma Thomas in
1952. Mr. Albert is survived by six children, Kathy, Keith, Scarlett,
Angela, and Darryl, all of Detroit, and Steven of Kansas City, Kansas;
daughters-in-law, Karen and Diane; son-in-law, Tyrone; sisters, Frances,
Marie, Charlsie, Annie Ruth and Grace; one brother-in-law; 11 grandchildren;
two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Interment was
at Detroit Memorial Park West. Thompson Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

ALLEN - Laura E. Allen
- The Rev. Al Hamilton officiated at the Feb. 5 services held for Laura
Edith Allen at John Wesley AME Zion Church. Mrs. Allen died Jan. 30 at
Henry Ford Hospital. She was 78. Born Laura Edith Parrish in Marion,
Alabama on April 22, 1918, she moved to Detroit at a young age. A
graduate of Cass Technical High School, she married the late Guy Allen
in 1936. A member of John Wesley AME since 1953, Mrs. Allen was an active
member of the Senior Usher Board for many years. Known as a woman always
willing to lend a helping hand, she was fondly referred to as "Aunt
E." Mrs. Allen is survived by her nieces, Gwen, Betty, Maurice and
Neolla; great-nieces, Meredith and Renee; great-nephews, Howard, Allen,
Charles, Ronald and Edward, and many others. Arrangements were handled
by Thompson Funeral Home. Interment was at Grand Lawn Cemetery. (Michigan

ANDERSON - Stewart A.
Anderson Jr. - Bishop Phillip Pulliam officiated at the Feb. 13 services
held for Stewart Eugene Anderson at the Greenfield chapel of Thompson
Funeral Homes. Mr. Anderson died Feb. 7. He was 85. Born in Anderson,
South Carolina on May 15, 1911, Mr. Anderson was educated at Reed
Street High School and later entered Hampton Institute. Employed by Ford
Motor Company for 35 years, he retired in 1974. He later opened his own
automotive paint and body shop. Married to the late Bertha Townes in 1937,
he married Vivienne Edwards in 1970. A Mason in Mount Pavan Lodge No.
2, Prince Hall affiliation, Mr. Anderson served his lodge faithfully for
45 years. He also served two terms as worshipful master and as chairman
of several committees. He was awarded life membership in 1987 after 35
years served. He was also a member of St. Agnes Chapter No. 28, Order
of the Eastern Star, Prince Hall affiliation. Mr. Anderson is survived
by his daughters, Marian Wheatley and Amanda Frost; grandchildren, Diana,
Nannette and Theodore; sisters, Vivian Moultrie and Gwendolyn Anderson
and many others. Interment was at Mt. Hope Memorial Gardens. (Michigan

ANTHONY - Walter Anthony
- Services for Walter Anthony were held March 7 at People's Community
Church with Rev. Martin E. Bolton officiating. Mr. Anthony, 80, died March
3. Born May 16, 1916 in Brownsville, Tennessee, Mr. Anthony was
educated in the Brownsville Public School system. He later moved to Detroit
where he went to work at the Great Lakes Steel co. in Ecorse. Mr. Anthony
worked as the doorman for North Park towers in Southfield until his retirement
in 1993. At that time he became a member of People's Community Church.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; a son, Michael; two nieces in Brownsville,
Tennessee, Alma Taylor and Flora Winfield; great-great special niece,
Ida Carouthers of Mason, Tennessee; and a host of relatives. Arrangements
were handled by the Thompson Funeral Home. Interment was at Elmwood Cemetery.

BACON - Arthur Bacon
- Services for Arthur Bacon was held Jan. 25 at the Dexter chapel of the
Thompson Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold Huggins officiating. Mr. Bacon
died Jan. 21. He was 85. Born May 30, 1911 in Wayland, Georgia,
Mr. Bacon was employed by Kelsey-Hayes. He retired in 1975. He enjoyed
fishing, being peaceful in his home and caring for his family. Mr. Bacon
is survived by his son, Henry Jones; daughter-in-law, Salome; six grandchildren,
10 great-grandchildren, sisters, Ollie Mae Scott and Rosa Lee Mace, and
many others. Arrangements were handled by Thompson Funeral Home. Interment

BAILEY - Jennie L. Bailey
- Services for Jennie Lou Bailey were held Dec. 28 at Mt. Zion New Covenant
Missionary Baptist Church with pastor Charles Middleton Sr. officiating.
Mrs. Bailey died Dec. 24 at St. John's Hospital. She was 79.Born June
7, 1917 in Sanderville, Georgia, Mrs. Bailey graduated from Industrial
High School in 1937, after moving to Birmingham, Alabama. Following
her marriage to the late Orren F. Bailey, Mrs. Bailey became a
licensed beautician. After moving to Detroit she established her own beauty
shop. She later worked for the Detroit Board of Education until she retired.
As a member of Mt. Zion New Covenant, Mrs. Bailey served on the Mothers'
Board and Minister Board as well as taught Sunday school. Mrs. Bailey
is survived by her son, Daryl D. Bailey; granddaughter, India; mother,
Lillie Caison; brothers, Ralph, Roy, John and Samuel Caison; sisters,
Margaret Daniels, Lillie R. Blount and Mary E. Motley, and many other
relatives. Arrangements were handled by Thompson Funeral Home. Interment

BANKS - Martha A. Banks
- Services for Martha Ann Banks were held Jan. 15 at St. James Missionary
Baptist Church with Pastor James A. Jennings Jr. officiating. Mrs. Banks
died Jan. 9. She was 74. Born Martha Johnson on Nov. 22, 1922 in
Prattsville, Alabama, she received her early education there. Married
to the late Walter Banks in 1935, Mrs. Banks was a long time faithful
member of St. James Missionary. After living in Willow Run, the family
moved to Westland in 1956. Mrs. Banks was employed at the Dobbs House
in Romulus and Al Green's Catering Service at Willow Run Airport. Many
had enjoyed her creations while in-flight on airlines across the county.
She retired in 1985 after 40 years as a catering supervisor. Mrs. Banks
is survived by her daughters, Mary Frederick and Margie Coffield; grandsons,
Lawrence, Hermon, Marcus and Paul; great-grandchildren, Vetra, Coprey,
Jeremy, Xavier, Jenae and Shlaya, and many other relatives. Arrangements
were handled by Swanson Funeral Home. Interment was at United Memorial

BANKS - Shavonna N. Banks
- Rites for Shavonna NaTasha Banks were held October 2 at Faith Clinic
COGIC. Officiating was the Rev. Zachary Hicks. Born July 8, 1996, Shavonna
Died Sept. 26 at the age of 2½ years. She is survived by her mother, Shelakhan
Banks; father, Dre' Green; grandmother, Michell Banks; great-grandmother,
Cora Joyce Banks, and many relatives. Interment was at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

BARNETT - Willie Barnett
Sr. - Bishop Phillip Pulliam officiated at the Feb. 5 services held
for Willie Barnett Sr. at the Greenfield chapel of Thompson Funeral Homes.
Mr. Barnett died Jan. 30. He was 70. Born Nov. 23, 1926 in Birmingham,
Alabama, Mr. Barnett was educated in the Oak Grove and White Grove
school districts. After doing some traveling he settled in the Detroit
area where he married the late Rena Bryant. He later married Evelyn
Bailey. Known as a "man's man," Mr. Barnett retired from
General Motors after 30 years of service. His motto was "What's right
is right; what's wrong is wrong, and its as simple as that." This
was a value he instilled in his children as he was raising them. Mr. Barnett
is survived by his wife Evelyn; sons, Willie Jr. and Ronald; daughters,
Lois and Yvonne; grandchildren, Sherrie, Wynita, LaShanna, Andrena, Willie
III and Maverick Jr.; great-granddaughter, Arielle; sister, Mary; brothers,
Charles, Conley and John; three stepchildren, and many other relatives.
Interment was at Detroit Memorial Park-West. (Michigan Chronicle, February

BEAL - Ada Bell Beal - An
October 29 Memorial service and October 30 funeral for Ada Bell Beal were
held at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Officiating was Mt. Zion Pastor
Sterling L. Jones. Mrs. Beal died Thursday, October 24 in Holy Cross Hospital.
She was 66.Ada Bell Jones was born September 3, 1930 in Stoneville,
Mississippi. She married Eddie Lee Beal Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee
and in 1948 and they became the parents of 13 children, two of whom preceded
her in death. After moving to Detroit in 1967, Mrs. Beal joined the congregation
at Old Landmark Baptist Church and later at Mt. Zion, where she served
with Nurses Guild No. 1. She frequently attended Bible studies, revivals
and special events at churches where her children are members, including
Hope Christian Fellowship, Holy Ghost Full Gospel and Jubilee Christian
Church. A Detroit Board of Education retiree, she joined the staff at
New Child Development Center in 1991 and became an integral part of Joy
of Jesus Ministries. In addition to her husband of 47 years, Mrs. Beal
is survived by five sons, Barry, Mack, Charles, Carl and William; six
daughters, Dessie Morgan, Debra Beal, Jackie Turnboe, Robin
Bailey, Rhonda Thomas and Patricia Adams; four brothers,
the Rev. Willie Jones, Roger Jr., Henry and Walter Jones; three sisters,
Dorothy Butler, Lucille and Lillie Mae Malone; 27 grandchildren,
nine great-grandchildren and many other relatives. Burial was at Lincoln
Memorial Park in Mt. Clemens. Handling arrangements was the Swanson Funeral

BELL - Edna Bell -
Services for Edna Bell were held Feb. 1 in the Greenfield chapel of Thompson
Funeral Homes with Bishop Phillip Pulliam officiating. Mrs. Bell died
Jan. 28. She was 82. Mrs. Bell was born May 10, 1915 to Rudolph and
Clara Brujitske. As an adult, people grew fond of calling her "Ma
Bell." In 1937 she was married to Leroy Hall. Mrs. Bell is
survived by her sons, Jay D. and Tommy; daughters, Lois Balderson, Barbara
Hollowell, Jessie M. Harris, Mary L. Jackson and Tonya J. Williams; 27
grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren and
other relatives. Interment was at Sacred Heart of St. Mary Cemetery. (Michigan

BLANCHARD - Terry Blanchard
- Father Thomas officiated at the Jan. 22 services held for Terry Blanchard
at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mr. Blanchard, 48, died Jan. 17. Born
August 23, 1948 in Detroit, Mr. Blanchard attended school in Detroit's
private Catholic schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy following graduation.
He received his honorable discharge in 198. Mr. Blanchard is survived
by his wife, Bernadetta; children, Terry Jr., Tracey, Che' Shawn, Bernard,
Tisha, Sky and Ty; several grandchildren, brothers, George, Menree and
Jimmy; stepfather, M.C. Higgins, and many others. Arrangements were handled
by Swanson Funeral Home. Interment was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. (Michigan

BODDIE - Edith C. Boddie
- Services were held at St. Matthews AME Church March 10 for Edith C.
Boddie, with the Rev. Eddie W. Robinson officiating. Mrs. Boddie, 69,
died March 6. Born August 21, 1927, Mrs. Boddie attended the Detroit Public
Schools, West Virginia State College and the Pro School of Beauty. She
joined St. Matthews AME Church in 1960 and was a member of the young Matrons
Club, Senior Usher Board and a Class Leader. She is survived by her son,
Larry Williams; daughter, Natalie Graves; grandchildren, Todd and Bliss
Graves; and many others. Arrangements were handled by Swanson Funeral

BOLTON - Ramone D. Bolton
- Superintendent Ernie McCutchen Sr. officiated at the Dec. 18 services
held for Ramone Deon Bolton at Whole Truth Church of God in Christ. Master
Bolton, 15, died Dec. 11 at Detroit Receiving Hospital. Born May 11, 1981
in Detroit, "Monie," as Master Bolton was affectionately called,
was being educated in the Detroit Public Schools. At the time of his death,
he was studying aeronautics at Davis Aerospace High School. An outgoing
young, Master Bolton was a member of the Whole Truth Church of God in
Christ where he was active on the Youth Praise Team, sang with the Adult
Inspirational Choir and the youth choir, and served as a junior deacon.
His hobbies included cooking, skating, singing, swimming, playing the
piano and writing. Mr. Bolton is survived by his brothers, Michael and
twin Raymond; grandparents, Herman and Nellie Bolton; great-grandmother,
Gladys Parham, and many other relatives. He was preceded in death by his
mother, Denise Bolton. Arrangements were handled by Swanson Funeral Home.
Interment was at Detroit Memorial Park Cemetery. (Michigan Chronicle,

BOOKER - Minnie B. Booker
- Minnie B. Booker of Detroit died Feb. 19 in St. Lukes Hospital in Phoenix,
Arizona following a brief illness. She was 78. A native of Texarkana,
Texas, Mrs. Booker came to Detroit at a young age and resided here
until 1990 when she relocated to Phoenix for health reasons. She had been
married to the late Jeff A. Booker. Mrs. Booker is survived by
a daughter, Claudette Williams; son-in-law, Dr. John Murphy; grandchildren,
Alicia and Snowden Williams; great-grandchildren, Airelle, Alexis and

BOWLSON - Keith L. Bowlson
- Services were held for Keith Lamar Bowlson on February 1 at Solomon
Temple in Detroit. Rev. Anthony Crawford officiated. Mr. Bowlson, 25,
died on January 27. Mr. Bowlson was born August 30, 1972 in Detroit. Keith
graduated from the Detroit Public Schools with honors on June 1, 1990.
He is survived by his father, Jesse Bowlson Sr.; mother, Sharon Ann Bowlson;
sister, Danielle; two brothers, Mark and Jesse Jr.; great-grandmother,
Willie Mae Bowlson; two grandmothers, Isabelle and Lula; and a host of
aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Arrangements were handled
by Swanson Funeral Home and interment was at Detroit Memorial Park West.

BRAMLETTE - James H. Bramlette
- St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church was the site of services for James
Henry Bramlette, 75, who died January 26. Father David Preuss officiated.
Mr. Bramlette was born May 8, 1921 in Detroit and was educated in Detroit
Public Schools. He served in World War II and received numerous medals.
In 1959, he married Luevonia Glover. For more than 30 years, Mr. Bramlette
worked for the city of Detroit, Dept. of Parks and Recreation. Left behind
to cherish his memory are wife, Luevonia; two daughters, Barbara and Cynthia;
a son, James; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and other
relatives. Swanson Funeral Home handled arrangements. Interment was at
Mt. Olivet Cemetery. (Michigan Chronicle, March 19-25, 1997, page D-5).
BROADNAX - Stanley Broadnax
- Services for Stanley Broadnax were held Tuesday, March 18, in the Thompson
Funeral Home Greenfield chapel. The Rev. Elder Burton officiated. Mr.
Broadnax, a master electrical and general contractor, died March 12 at
the age of 49. A native of Birmingham, Alabama he moved to Cleveland,
Ohio with his family at an early age and was reared by his late uncle,
Willie J. Hood and aunt, Alberta. He attended the public schools and then
college, and later earned a builder's license. He worked as a field service
engineer, operating and repairing microprocessors in computers in Cleveland
and Boston, Massachusetts before moving to Detroit in 1982. Mr. Broadnax
attended Second New Hope Tabernacle Church and taught carpentry, masonry
and electronics at Randolph Vocational/Technical High School. He is survived
by his wife, Joyce; son, Stuart; aunt, Alberta; father, Willie; two sisters,
Nelda Thompkins and Barbara McNelly; two brothers, John and Wilbert; five
grandchildren and many other relatives. Burial was at Detroit Memorial

BROOKS - Mahaley Brooks
- Services were held at New Light Baptist Church March 29 for Mahaley
Brooks, with Rev. Benjamin Stanley Baker officiating. Mrs. Brooks, 98,
died March 23 at Henry Ford Hospital. Born November 16, 1898 in Artesia,
Mississippi, Mrs. Brooks was married to the late Haywood Brooks Sr.
in 1916. In addition to raising her three children, two of whom - Annabelle
and Haywood, Jr. - preceded her in death. She also helped raise two nieces
and a great grand nephew. When she moved to Michigan, she joined New Light
Baptist Church. She continued to worship in the New Light Nursing Home
Chapel. Mrs. Brooks is survived by her son, Kaye; granddaughters, Kay
Frances Brooks, Van Ester Jemison, Yvonne Burke, Mahaley Woods and Brenda
Puckett; great-grandchildren, Marari, DeWayne, Portia, Cassie, Courtney,
Tekoa, Marshall Jr., Enad and Temeni; great-great-grandchildren, Maria,
Malik and Cierra; and many others. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery.

BROWN - Alberta Brown
- Bishop Phillip Pulliam officiated at the Dec. 27 services held for Alberta
Brown at the Dexter Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home. Mrs. Brown, 81, died
December 18 at Friendship Nursing Home. Born December 25, 1914 in Huntsville,
Alabama, Mrs. Brown was educated in the public schools of Alabama.
She moved to Detroit later in life. Mrs. Brown is survived by her sister,
Essie Mae Brown; devoted friend, Cora Montgomery, and many others. She
was preceded in death by her son. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery.

BROWN - Alfonso Brown
- Before Alfonso Brown died, representatives from the U.S. congress, the
Detroit City Council and the United Automobile Workers made certain he
knew they were grateful for his work as a union man and expert in voter
registration. Letters, plaques and certificates of acknowledgment were
sent to his bedside just days prior to his death. Mr. Brown, 69, who died
in his home March 24, was an active member of the UAW. Following his retirement
from Ford Motor Co., he became very active in political campaigns as a
representative of labor. A strong supporter of the Get Out the Vote campaign,
he was a delegate to the Michigan Democratic Party State Central Committee
and an executive board member and statutory vice chair of the 14th
District Democratic Party. Born on February 16, 1928 in Elyria, Ohio,
Mr. Brown attended the Detroit Public Schools after his family moved to
Michigan. Mr. Brown married Evelyn Jones in 1947 and became a member of
Hartford Memorial Baptist Church where he participated in the Hartford
Men's United. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; his sons, Clifford and
Gregory; daughters-in-law, Doris, Charlene and Kay; brother, Willie Henry
Brown; sister, Albertha Smith; several sisters and brothers-in-law; and
a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Services for Brown were held March
29 at Hartford. Dr. Charles Adams officiated. Interment was at Woodlawn
Cemetery. James H. Cole Home for Funerals Inc. handled the arrangements.

BROWN - Damon Brown
- Services for Damon Brown were held February 21 at Liberty Temple Baptist
Church with Rev. Sammuel Thompson officiating. Mr. Brown was 26 years
old. Born June 10, 1970, Mr. Brown, known as kindhearted and generous,
attended the Detroit Public Schools and graduated from Mumford High School.
Mr. Brown is survived by his parents, Katherine and Ernest Brown; his
children, Damon Nathaniel and Raven Twymon; and a host of other family
members. Arrangements were made by Swanson Funeral Home. Interment was

BROWN - Mary Ann Brown -
A service celebrating the life of Mary Ann Brown was held Thursday, October
17, at Peace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Arnold H. Brammeir officiating.
Mrs. Brown died October 13, in Bon Secours Hospital. She was 47. Born
Mary Ann Cooper, July 20, in Maben, Mississippi, she was
a product of Oktibbeha-Webster High School and Mississippi Valley State
University. After moving to Detroit in 1969, she joined the congregation
at Second Canaan Missionary Baptist Church and later at Peace Lutheran
where she served as a Sunday School teacher. Mrs. Brown is survived by
her husband, Kermit Jr.; two sons, Reginald and Rodney; a daughter, Tamara;
two granddaughters, T'Keyah and Ti'ara; her mother, Mary Rose Cooper;
half-sister, Eula Maxwell, and many other relatives. Burial was
at Detroit Memorial Park. Handling arrangements was the Swanson Funeral

BROWN - Robert W. Brown
- The Rev. Robert Smith officiated at the Jan. 18 services set for Robert
W. Brown at Swanson Funeral Home. Mr. Smith died Jan. 13. He was 77. Born
June 30, 1919 in Fayetteville, Tennessee, Mr. Brown was educated
there. He later moved to Detroit where he was employed by the Chrysler
Corporation. He retired in 1975. Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Ethel;
stepson, James Dickerson; stepdaughter, Odessa Robinson; eight grandchildren,
16 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives. Interment was at Elmwood

BURNETT - George C. Burnett
- Bishop Phillip Pulliam officiated at the Feb. 21 services held for George
E. Burnett at the Thompson Funeral Home Greenfield chapel. Mr. Burnett,
66, died Feb. 16. born March 7, 1930 in Augusta, Georgia, Mr. Burnett
moved to Detroit in 1963 where he joined Greater Missionary Baptist Church.
Employed by General Motors for 33 years, he had been married to the late
Mary Elizabeth Murray. Mr. Burnett is survived by his daughters, Brenda
Sampson, Linda Johnson, Chevonne Head, Debra Burnett Wider, Melody Burnett
Wise and Crystal Reasonover; sons, George Jr., Melvin Burnett and Antonnio

- Services for Edna Burton were held March 8 at Brown's Chapel Missionary
Baptist Church. She was 39. Born September 23, 1957 in Detroit, Ms. Burton
was educated in the Detroit Public Schools and graduated form the Detroit
Institute of Careers as a medical transcriptionist. Ms. Burton is survived
by her son, Edward; mother, Marie Burton; six sisters, Marlene Turner,
Jejuan Givens, Amanda Nunlee, Monica, Sandra and Susan Burton; two brothers,
harry and Oscar Burton; and a host of other family members. Arrangements
were made by Swanson Funeral Home. Interment was at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

BURTON - Olive Elizabeth
Burton - Family members and parishioners at Church of the Madonna
listened in quiet reverence as Father Robert Morand eulogized the Christian
live and humanitarian work of Olive Elizabeth Burton at services Saturday,
Jan. 18. The Madonna Choir rendered selections and the communion hymn,
"Precious Lord." Remarks were by Mrs. Burton's nephew, Leonard
Milliburn; family friend, Cheryl Anderson and granddaughter, Stephanie
Morrison. Mrs. Burton died Jan. 13 in Henry Ford Hospital following an
extended illness. Born Dec. 2, 1925 in Chatham, Ontario, she is
survived by her husband of 46 years, Fred Burton, Sr.; daughters, Tamara
Allen and Freda Morrison; grandchildren, Jason and Stefanee Morrison;
six brothers, George, John, Kenneth, Gordon, Garnet and William; a sister,
Margaret P. Ward, and a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Mrs. Burton was a dedicated member of the Church of Madonna. She sang
in the choir and solicited hundreds of pledges for the annual Focus: HOPE
walk, working closely with Fr. William Cunningham even during the time
when her health was failing. She was a strong supporter of the Rosa and
Raymond Parks Institute for Self-Development and worked tirelessly for
the NAACP. "Ollie" gave generously of her time and energies
to these and other community organizations. She played a pivotal role
in fostering harmonious race relations by welcoming African students into
her home as well as other ethnic students. There was always room for one
more at her table. She was a constant source of love and inspiration to
her husband, children and grandchildren. Interment was at Holy Sepulcher
Cemetery. Arrangements were by the James H. Cole Home for Funerals. (Michigan

BYAS - Ella V. Byas
- Services were held at Thompson Funeral Home, April 1 for Ella Vaughn
Byas, with Rev. Keith Lemmons officiating. Mrs. Byas died March 25 at
age 79. Born April 25, 1917 in Birmingham, Alabama, Mrs. Byas attended
Birmingham Public Schools, the Industrial High School in Birmingham, and
Miles College. She subsequently entered Alabama State University, where
she graduated with honors in education. Mrs. Byas taught in the Birmingham
public school system for 10 years before earning a masters degree in education
from the University of Detroit. Upon moving to Detroit with her family,
Mrs. Byas began teaching at Fitzgerald Middle School. She retired from
the Detroit Public School system in 1982. She is survived by her husband,
Andrew Byas; children, Kim and Yang Ja Byas; four grandchildren; brother,
Reuben Vaughn; sister, Georgia Currie; and many others. Interment was

CALDWELL - Mary Caldwell
- The Rev. Ananias H. Holland officiated at the Jan. 25 services held
for Mary Felder Caldwell at Grace CME Church. Mrs. Caldwell died Jan.
19. She was 78. Born May 6, 1918 in St. Matthews, South Carolina,
Mrs. Caldwell was educated in South Carolina. Married to the late Arthur
Caldwell Jr., she was devoted to her husband, children, family, friends
and church. She was a dedicated member of the J. Claude Allen Club. She
later joined the New Resurrection M.B. Church under the pastorship of
her son, the Rev. Arthur Caldwell III. Mrs. Caldwell is survived by her
children, Mable Jackson, Arthur Caldwell III and Hallie Caldwell; grandchildren,
Andre, Arthur, Clarence, Jerome, Sharonda, Arthur IV, Gabrielle, Nicole,
Tracy and Henry III; eight grand-grandchildren, sisters, Pauline Larrymore
and Dorothy Scott, and many others. Arrangements were handled by Thompson

CANADA - Elee Canada
- Services for Elee Canada were held March 3. at the Thompson Funeral
Home Dexter chapel with Bishop Phillip Pulliam officiating. Mr. Canada
died Feb. 26. He was 86. Born in Louann, Arkansas on August 8,
1810, Mr. Canada attended school in Louann. Married to Maggie Gaskin,
he had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He later moved to
Detroit where he was employed by the General Motors Company until retiring.
Mr. Canada is survived by his sons, Harold, John and Robert; daughter-in-law,
Jacqueline; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many others.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ernest. Interment was at Detroit Memorial
Park-West.
CAREY - Flora Carey
- Services for Flora Carey were held March 15 at Brown's Chapel Missionary
Church. Rev. Wilbert Humphries and Rev. Dr. Freeman Brown officiated.
Mrs. Carey, 68, died March 6. Born March 13, 1928 in Sherard, Mississippi,
Mrs. Carey moved to Detroit at 21, and was a member of Brown's Chapel
for the last 25 years. She is survived by her husband, James Carey; children,
Vernelle, Margaret, Eliza, Avis and James; and a host of other family

CARSON - Glenda M. Carson
- Pastor Bobby C. Hymon Sr. officiated at the January 8 services held
for Glenda Marie Carson at the Greenfield chapel of Thompson Funeral Homes.
Ms. Carson died January 3. She was 48. Born May 28, 1948, Ms. Carson was
a graduate of Mackenzie High School where she had been active in numerous
clubs, including the Y team and Spanish Club. She later attended the Lewis
College of Business. Ms. Carson is survived by her companion, Michael
Miller; sisters, Janet and Anita; brothers, Julius and Victor, and many

CARTER - Callie L. Carter
- Bishop Phillip Pulliam officiated at the Feb. 15 services held for Callie
L. Carter at the Thompson Funeral Home Greenfield chapel. Mrs. Carter
died Feb. 12 at Botsford Hospital. She was 82. Born Callie Lynch
on July 21, 1914, in Bessemer, Alabama, Mrs. Carter was educated
at Liberty High School in Williamson, West Virginia and West Virginia
State College. Married to the late Maurice C. Carter, the couple
had two children. Mrs. Carter is survived by her daughters, Anita Dixie
and Joanne James; grandchildren, Mira Walker, Annette Trice, Thomas Dixie
Jr., and Pamela Dixie; great-grandson, Myron Walker; niece, Vivian Moore;
cousin, Anne McCullum, and many other relatives. Interment was at Detroit

CARTER - Joseph T. Carter
- Joseph T. Carter, drummer and vocalist for the 1950's jazz vocal group,
the Premiers, died March 5, in Detroit. He was 72. The former entertainer
and Wayne County Supervisor died after a long illness. Carter, born April
18, 1924 in Jackson, Mississippi, was a World War II Veteran. In
1948, after the war, he married Genevieve Cochran of Detroit on May 5,
1948. Mr. Carter began his entertainment career when his brother, William
T. Carter, became his promoter and personal manager. Mr. Carter's younger
brother, Jesse, was included. Their first recordings were "I Fell
For You" and "Lazy Daisy" on chess Records with the Noc
Tunes group, a quintet featuring Walter Tate, Dave Hamilton and Jesse
and Joseph Carter. In 1956, the Noc Tunes became Dave Hamilton's Soft
Tones and then Dave Hamilton and the 5 Peppers. The 5 Peppers became a
popular Detroit area attraction and performed at the Flame Show Bar, Rip's
Little Club, Lavert's and Morry Baker Frolic Show Bar. The group was frequently
mentioned in the Michigan Chronicle and Ziggy Johnson's column "Zagging
with Ziggy" in the 50's . The 5 Peppers personnel included Cookie
Green on saxophone, Johnny Jackson and Ted Blakemore on vocals, Jesse
Carter on bass and Joe Carter on drums. Their popular tunes were "Hold
On" and "Rocking Chair Baby." In 1957, the 5 Peppers became
The Premiers, a musical quartet featuring Joseph Carter on drums, Jesse
Carter on bass, George Bohanon on trombone and Alice McLeoud on vocals.
The quartet gained recognition for their smooth, layered harmonies and
arrangements. Carter's arrangement of tunes such as "Mood Indigo,"
"Lonesome Mood," "Come Dancing With Me," and "Finis"
were crowd pleasers. During their 1957 East Coast Tour the Premiers performed
with Charles Fuqua and the Ink Spots, then Cab Calloway's Cotton Club
Review in Miami Beach before opening at the New Club Calvert. This engagement
featured Arthur Prysock. The opening was attended by Billy Eckstine, Sammy
Davis Jr., Johnny Mathis, Dorothy Dandridge and Dave Hamilton who performed
as guests. In 1960, McLeoud left the Premiers and the group continued
to perform with noted artists such as Della Reese, Jacquey Evans and Motown
Song Writer/Producer Sylvia Moy. They performed at the Gillwood Inn, the
Detroit Latin Quarters and the Bohemia Club before disbanding in 1963.
Joseph Carter became a Wayne County employee in 1964 and became a Parks
Supervisor for the Wayne County Road Commission. A member of Alpha Psi
Alpha fraternity and a Mason, he received his bachelors degree in English
from the Detroit Institute of Technology and Wayne State University. Mr.
Carter was an active community resident and sang in the People's Community
Church Chancellor Choir along with his brother Jesse. Their last public
performance together was in Art Tatum's Jazz Mass. Mr. Carter is survived
by his wife, Genevieve Carter; his sons, Writer, Keith, Sterling, and
Mark; daughters Sherrie, Lynette, Allia Shantay, and Allia; three grandchildren,
Joseph Carter III, Genae and Marquese; siblings, William T. Carter, Dovie
Pickett and Bertha Harris; sister-in-law, Loretta Carter and daughter

CHATMAN - Clarence Chatman
- Services for Clarence Chatman were held April 18 at Christian Community
Baptist Church with Rev. M.L. Gooch officiating. Mr. Chatman was 42 years
old when he died April 12. Born April 1, 1955 in Pittsview, Alabama.
Mr. Chatman was educated in the Detroit Public School system. He is survived
by his mother, Ruby Mae Chatman; two brothers, Willie and Robert Chatman;
two sisters, Ethel Chatman and Sharon Morgan; and a host of other relatives.

CLAYTON - Lucille Hughes
Clayton - Services for Mother Lucille Hughes Clayton were held February
7 at Greater Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church with Milton Pierce,
assistant pastor, officiating. Mrs. Clayton was born in Worth, Georgia.
In 1925 she was married to Freddie Clayton. From this union came 12 children.
After moving to Detroit, Mother Clayton joined Greater Mt. Carmel where
she served in the Senior Choir, the Mothers Ministry and the Pastor's
Anniversary Committee. Mrs. Clayton made her transition on February 2.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory three daughters, Ida Johnson,
Nancy Tolbert and Lillie Beaton; four sons, Orrie, Edward, Obediah and
Clyde; and many other relatives. Interment was at Trinity Cemetery. Swanson

COKLOW - Karen D. Coklow
- Bishop Phillip Pulliam officiated at the March 1 services held for Karen
Doreen Coklow at the Greenfield chapel of Thompson Funeral Homes. Mrs.
Coklow died Feb. 25 at Henry Ford Hospital. She was 40. Born Karen Clemons
February 18, 1957 in Detroit, Mrs. Coklow attend St. Paul Life of Praise.
She was preceded in death by her son, Eugene Coklow Jr.; mother, Barbara
Clemons, and brother, Edward Clemons Jr. Mrs. Coklow is survived by her

COLE - Susie Cole
- Services were held for Susie Yvonne Cole January 30 at New Birth Church

Born September 24, 1940, Ms. Cole attended Miller High School, and was
an employee at Medical Recovery Center until she became ill. She is survived
by her son, Malcolm Perrie Robinson; grandchildren, Matthew and Ebony;
sisters, Frances Rolajid, Virginia Raines, Cherylee McCullough and Lacie

COLLINS - Ann Love Collins
- Services for Ann Love Collins were held Monday, May 5 at Bethel AME
Church, with Pastor Norman V. Osborne officiating. Mrs. Collins died April
30 following an extended illness. She was 81. Born December 4, 1915 in
Butts County, Georgia to the Rev. and Mrs. Richard Wynn,
she moved to Detroit in 1941. She joined Bethel AME in 1953 and was an
active member until her health failed. During her 44-year membership,
she served as a member of the December Birthmonth Club, Detroit Housewives
League, Nellie Pierce Club and Precious Coin Club. She was a life member
of Central State University Mothers Association's Michigan Chapter. Mrs.
Collins is survived by her husband, Samuel; son, Thomas Love; two sisters,
Erna Tilman and Ruth Stodghill; niece, Willie Mae Price; five grandchildren,
a great-granddaughter and many other relatives. Burial was at Elmwood

COOPERWOOD - Johnnie Cooperwood

Cooperwood. Ms. Cooperwood, 24, died March 16. Born December 30, 1972,

College. She was known for her beautiful smile and her warm heart. Ms.
Cooperwood is survived by her mother, Birdie L. Cooperwood; sisters, Sonceria

Keith Baldwin, Alonzo Sharp III, Lorenzo Sharp and Jermaine Cooperwood;

COPELAND - Albert Copeland
- Services for Albert Copeland were held March 29 at World Wide Missionary
Baptist Church with the Rev. William Cunningham officiating. Mr. Copeland
was 65 years old when he died March 24. Born February 29, 1932 in Talbotton,
Georgia, Mr. Copeland relocated to Detroit in the late 1940's and
served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, receiving the National Defense
Service Medal Award while in Germany. Mr. Copeland is survived by his
wife, Lois Copeland; daughters, Linda, Brenda and Celeste; two sons-in-law,
Leonard Morgan and Milton Campbell; and a host of other relatives. Arrangements

COPELAND - Marie L. Copeland
- The Rev. Charles Butler officiated at the Jan. 10 services held for
Marie Lightfoot Copeland at New Calvary Baptist Church. Mrs. Copeland,
79, died January 5. Born April 1, 1917 in Little Rock, Arkansas,
Mrs. Copeland moved to Chicago as a youth. In 1928, she moved to Detroit
where she completed high school at Miller High, graduating in 1935. Employed
by the federal government for 15 years, she worked at Fort Wayne during
World War II and later at the Ordinance Tank Automotive Command. Mrs.
Copeland later was employed by the Detroit Board of Education for 23 years,
working as a secretary. Before her 1983 retirement she had worked at the
Clay Building, the Macabees Building, Clippert School and the Region II
Area office. A member of New Calvary Baptist, Mrs. Copeland was active
in the church school program where she taught Sunday school for many years
and was a member of the Young Matrons, the Dorcas Circle and the Mission
Department. She was also active in the American Business Women's Association.
Mrs. Copeland is survived by her husband, J. C. Copeland; son, Ronald
Copeland; daughters, Atty. Linda Copeland-Drake and Gail Copeland; grandchildren,
Darrell, Russell, Elliott, Lynetta and Jarrett; sisters, Alberta Shelton,
Zelma Lightfoot and Alice Johnson; brothers, Jesse and James Lightfoot,
and many others. Arrangements were handled by McFall Brothers Funeral

COTTON - Anthony Cotton
- Services for Anthony Cotton were held February 22 at Greater Community
Baptist Church with Pastor Marvin J. Kelley officiating. Mr. Cotton was
34 years old. He died February 14. Born April 18, 1961, Mr. Cotton attended
Kettering High School and graduated from Detroit Business Institute in
1980. He worked at Chrysler Corporation from 1996 until his death. Mr.
Cotton is survived by his wife, Tracey; his grandmother, Jewel Jones;
four sisters, Sheila Smith, Linda Sims, Kimberly Cotton and Bridgette
Cotton; two brothers, D' Wayne and David; and a host of other family members.

COVINGTON - Arzelius Covington
- Services for Arzelius Covington were held Thursday, September 12, in
the Swanson Funeral Home Boulevard Chapel. The Reverend Kenneth Taylor
officiated. Mr. Covington died September 8 at the age of 17. Born February
13, 1979 in Detroit, he was a junior at Finney High School. Fondly called
"Zeke," his goals were to complete high school and become a
police officer. Survivors include his mother, Roydia; father, Henry; two
brothers, Henry III and Anthony; five nieces and nephews, and many other
relatives and friends. Burial was at Detroit Memorial Park-East. (Michigan

COX - Marion Cox - Services
for Marion Mitchell Cox were held Oct. 5 at Greater Rock of Ages Church
of God in Christ with Elder F. L. Mitchell officiating. Mrs. Cox died
Sept. 29 following a lengthy illness. She was 41. Born June 13, 1955 in
Detroit, Mrs. Cox was educated in the Detroit Public Schools system. An
active member of Greater Rock of Ages she was known as an outstanding
soloist and sang in the church choir. Although on-going illnesses confined
her to the hospital in her last year, Mrs. Cox was happy to be able to
celebrate her parents 50th wedding anniversary in June and take part in
her family reunion in July. Mrs. Cox is survived by her son, Jerome; parents,
Elder and Mrs. Fred Mitchell Sr.; sisters, Diane, Sharon, Vivian
and Valerie; brother, Fred Jr., and many other relatives. Arrangements
were handled by Swanson Funeral Home. Interment was at Gethsemane Cemetery.

CRAFT - Bernard Craft
Sr. - Services for Bernard Craft Sr. were held Feb. 13 with Pastor
Robert Kelly officiating. Mr. Craft died Feb. 5. He was 56. Born Dec.
16, 1940, Mr. Craft, who was known to his family and friends as "Poochie,"
lived in Ferndale as a youth. After relocating to Detroit he attended
Northern High School where he met his wife, Bernice Goldsby. The
couple married in 1960. A well-loved family man, Mr. Craft was known as
a man who brought laughter to many. He had enjoyed spending humor-filled
sports weekends with his late brother, Pony. A laborer who held a variety
of jobs, Mr. Craft had been employed by the Chrysler corp., the Michigan
State Fairgrounds and the International Automobile shows. In addition
to his wife, Mr. Craft is survived by children, Bernard, May, Ina, Tony
and Jomo; grandchildren, Paul, T.J., Mario, Durand and Kiki; sisters,
Daisy Wilson, Shirley Brown, and Climatine Sailor; brother, Charles Craft,
and many other relatives. Arrangements were handled by Barksdale Funeral

DANIELS - Casstella Daniels
- The Rev. Ocie Tabb Jr. officiated at the Feb. 11 services held for Casstella

Born Casstella McGregory in Mayhew, Mississippi on Feb.
9, 1925, Mrs. Daniels married the late James Daniels in 1953. Mrs.

DANIELS - Mitchell Daniels
Jr. - The Rev. Joseph Hobbs officiated at the Feb. 1 services held
for Mitchell Daniels Jr. at Eastern Star Missionary Baptist Church. Mr.
Daniels died Jan. 22. He was 52. Born July 22, 1944 in Birmingham,
Alabama, Mr. Daniels moved to Detroit as a youth. A dedicated worker
at the Chrysler Mound Road Engine Plant, he had worked there 32 years.
A life time member of the NAACP, he also took an active role in the UAW.
He was known as a devoted family man who was always willing to lend a
helping hand. Mr. Daniels is survived by his wife, Janice; sons, Edward
Sherrod and Mitchell III, Carlton Kenneth, Christopher and Craig Lamont;
stepson, Derrick; 13 grandchildren, parents, Mitchell Sr. and Edna Daniels;
sister, Earnestine Jordan; brothers, Bobby Joe, Leothis and Taylor Daniels,

DAVIDSON - Walter Davidson
- Services for Walter Jordan Davidson were held at Annapolis Park church
of Christ on Saturday, March 29. Terrance R. McClain officiated. Mr. Davidson,
62, died on March 22. Mr. Davidson was born on March 29, 1934 in Ashville,
North Carolina. He attended Ashville School system. He married Virginia
Gist on June 12, 1955 and moved with his family to Detroit in 1967. He
worked at the Sharon Steel Corporation until his retirement in 1981. Mr.
Davidson is survived by his wife, Virginia; five children, Tyrone Howard
Davidson, Donna Renee Davidson, Veronica Rochelle Davidson, Darryl Eugene
Davidson and Lawrence Emanuel Gist; sisters, Annie Mae Jeter, Martha Black,
Clementine (Willie) Belcher, Carolyn (Henry) Hill and Mammie Davidson;
brothers, Ernest, Desley (Toni), Leroy (Willie Mae), Luther (Queen), James
(Caster) and Stanley (Louise); two grandchildren, Jermaine Richard and

DAVIS - Carrie H. Davis
- Services for Carrie H. Davis were held Tuesday, February 4, at Greater
St. Peter AME Zion Church with Rev. George A. Stewart officiating. Mrs.
Davis died January 29, 1997 at the age of 87. Mrs. Davis was born November
17, 1909 in Montgomery, Alabama to Richard and Laura Hurst.
She graduated from Alabama State College and taught school in both Montgomery
and Detroit. From her marriage to Henry Lee Davis came seven children.
She was a loyal member of Greater St. Peter AME and sang in the choir.
Left behind to cherish previous memories of Carrie H. Davis are four children,
11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one sister and many other
relatives. Swanson Funeral Home handled arrangements. Interment was at

DAVIS - Clifton Davis - Services
for Clifton Lindon Davis were held Monday, Dec. 16 at Apostolic Faith
Temple with Bishop N. Smith officiating. Mr. Davis died Sunday, Dec. 8,
at the age of 45. Born October 4, 1951 in Memphis, Tennessee, he
was a product of the Detroit Public Schools and Eastern Michigan University.
He accepted Christ at a young age. Mr. Davis was an avid basketball fan.
He married Sandra Greer in 1973 and they were the parents of one
son. Survivors include his mother, Ousie Davis; son Clifton, brothers,
Willie C., James E., Sammie L, and Michael; a sister, Elise Brinkley,
special friend, Fiesta Jackson and many other relatives. Burial
was at Grand Lawn Cemetery. Arrangements were by the Joseph N. Hutchison

DAVIS - Girvious Davis
- Services for Girvious T. Davis Jr. were held Jan. 18 at Lomax Temple
AME Zion Church with the Rev. Joel D. Miles officiating. Mr. Davis died
Jan. 13. He was 77. Born July 13, 1919 in Harrisburg, Arkansas,
Mr. Davis grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois. After graduating
from Lincoln High School, he attended Southern Illinois University in
Carbondale. After relocating to Detroit in 1947, Mr. Davis joined Lomax
Temple where he sang in the senior choir, served as a Sunday school teacher
in the Youth Department and was treasurer of the Trustee Board for more
than 30 years. He had been employed by the Chrysler Corp. at the old Desoto
plant and the export-import plant before retiring after 30 years of service.
Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, Lillian; son, Kenneth; daughters, Patricia
Sailor, Barbara Tucker and Adrienne Love; 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren,
brother, Eldridge; sisters, Clemmie Foote and Lurlean Franklin, and many
others. Arrangements were handled by Barksdale Funeral Home. Interment
was at Woodlawn Cemetery. (Michigan Chronicle, February 12-18, 1997, page

DAVIS, HELMS - Jesse D. Davis
and Wilma Davis Helms - Joint services for Jesse D. Davis and his
daughter, Wilma Davis Helms, were held Friday, November 1, at Puritan
Avenue Baptist Church. Pastor Donald F. Failes officiated. Mr. Davis died
October 25 in Riverview Hospital at the age of 78. Mrs. Helms died later
in the day at Grace Hospital. She was 49. A native of Alamo, Tennessee,
Mr. Davis married the late Floatee Evans in Chicago in 1944
and they became the parents of four children. A self-employed electrician,
he had been a Detroit resident since 1985. Mrs. Helms was born March 6,
1947 in Chicago. She lived in Marston, Missouri before moving to
Detroit with her son, Victor L. Davis, in 1969, and in 1988, married William
J. Helms. Employed by the federal government, she worked at the VA hospital
in Allen Park and later at the Social Security Administration in Detroit.
At Puritan Avenue Baptist, she served as a deaconess, Sunday School teacher
and member of the Women's Group, Mission and Inspirational Choir. Mr.
Davis is survived by a son, Larry J. Davis; two daughters, Lillian M.
and Mary L. Davis; five other children, George, David, Jimmy Lee, Melvin
and Rosemary Hunt; ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren
and many other relatives. In addition to her brothers and sisters, Mrs.
Helms is survived by her husband and son, a daughter, Brandi Helms; two
step-daughters, Cynthia Helms and Stephanie Davis; two aunts, three uncles
and many other relatives. Mr. Davis was buried at Mason's Cemetery in
Point Pleasant, Missouri, and Mrs. Helms at Detroit Memorial Cemetery
in Warren. Arrangements were handled by the Swanson Funeral Home. (Michigan

DAVIS - Herman V. Davis
Jr. - Services for Herman Van Buren Davis Jr. were held Feb. 1 at
the Thompson Funeral Home Greenfield chapel. Mr. Davis died Jan. 28. He
was 81. Born April 9, 1915 in Nashville, Tennessee, Mr. Davis grew
up in Chattanooga. He later married Motis Senette Hester,
with whom he celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary in 1996. A veteran
of the U.S. Army, he attended upholstery school on the GI Bill after moving
to Detroit. A true craftsman, he also studied fabrics and furniture design.
His numerous customers kept him in constant demand. Mr. Davis' hobbies
included reading and philosophical discussions. In addition to his wife,
Mr. Davis is survived by his daughter, Doris Jean Hodge, Ph.D; granddaughter,
Angela Karen Nasir, MD, and many other relatives. Interment was at Detroit
Memorial Park-West. (Michigan Chronicle, February 12-18, 1997, page D-5).
DAVIS - Vernittie Davis
- Services were held at Oak Grove AME Church, April 18 for Vernittie Davis,
with the Rev. Gregory G.M. Ingram officiating. Mrs. Davis, 64, died April
13. Born February 18, 1933 in Westfield, Alabama, Mrs. Davis worked
for Michigan Bell for 38 years as a telephone operator. She was an unsung
hero, who always put her family first. Mrs. Davis is survived by her mother,
Ella Wooten; husband Robert; son, Anthony; daughter, Regina Scales; granddaughters,
Brooke and Taylor Davis; and many others. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery.
Arrangements were handled by Thompson Funeral Home. (Michigan Chronicle,
