Obituaries from the Michigan Chronicle July 30 - Aug. 5, 1997 Page D-6 CARROLL - Walter H. Carroll - Services for Walter H. Carroll were held at Swanson Funeral Home, May 12, with Rev. Steve Arthur officiating. Mr. Carroll, 52, died May 6 at Sinai Hospital. Born April 7, 1945, in Edwards, Miss., Mr. Carrol was educated in the Dallas Independent School District, and was a graduate of Madison High School in Dallas. After graduation, Mr. Carroll was drafted into the Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne. Following his discharge in 1965, he moved to Detroit, where he continued his education at Wayne State University. Mr. Carroll was a past master of Tyre Lodge #34 P. H. A., a past fraternal member of Wolverine Consistory #6 and past Potentate of Marracci Temple #13. For many years, he enjoyed being in the Color Guard of Marracci Temple's Drum and Bugle Corp. He is survived by his wife, Monica Carroll; daughter, Waltreese Carroll; sisters, Jessie Manns, Pearlena Luckey and DeLoris Moore; brothers, Willie, Emanuel and Albert; and many others. Interment was at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery. GIBBONS-ANDERSON - Vivian Rose Gibbons-Anderson - Services were held July 19 at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church for Vivian Rose Gibbons-Anderson with Rev. J. H. Johnson officiating. Ms. Anderson, 68, died July 13 at Grace Hospital. Ms. Gibbons was born to the late James and Rebecca Gibbons Sept. 17, 1928, in Sandersville, Ga. She moved to Detroit with her family in 1935, where she joined Hamlett Temple CME Church. She was educated in Detroit public schools and graduated from Northern High in 1945. She studied music in college and attended Breithaupt Vocational-Technical School, where she excelled in culinary arts. Ms. Gibbons worked for Birmingham Plastics for more than 15 years and worked as a banquet server for more than 20 years with Hotel and Restaurant Employees Union Local 24. She also did food catering and cake decorating. She is survived by her brother, Cecil; daughters, Eunice Appling and Rochelle Hunt; son, James and a host of other relatives and friends. Interment was at Detroit Memorial Park. Arrangements were made by Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. HICKS - Jefferson Hicks - Services for Jefferson Hicks were held July 12 at St. Matthew's and St. Joseph's Episcopal Church with Fr. Glendon Heath Officiating. Mr. Hicks, 52, died July 7. Mr. Hicks was born Feb. 14, 1945 to Fannie and George W. Hicks in Detroit and excelled in athletics at Ferndale High School in royal Oak. He lead his basketball team to the Class A Championship. It was the school's only state basketball championship. After earning an athletic scholarship at Northwood Institute and participating in several varsity sports, Mr. Hicks graduated with an associate degree in business administration. He worked for the F. W. Woolworth Company in Kalamazoo and was promoted to branch manager and buyer before becoming a buyer for the J. L. Hudson Company. In 1969, with the help of family and close friends, Mr. Hicks started Young Men on the Move Inc., which specialized in the manufacture and packaging of plastic products for retail stores. He married the former Charlotte A. Mackey Aug. 29, 1970, and, in 1979, started Pearl's Kitchen, a minority food brokerage firm. Mr. Hicks was honored as Small Businessman of the Year by the Small Business Administration in 1972 and Entrepreneur of the Year by the Minority Women Network in 1995. Inc. Magazine awarded him a plaque declaring Pearl's Kitchen "one of the fastest growing private companies in America in 1989. Under Mr. Hick's direction, Pearl's Kitchen annually paid several Ferndale students fees at summer basketball camps. The firm also supported the Motor City Mavericks' 1995 National Amateur Athletic Union championship basketball season and Detroit's Midnight Basketball league. Mr. Hicks is survived by his wife; daughter Cortney; sons, Dorie, Jeremiah, Rondell; sisters, Marie (William) Brooks, Nellie (James) Rice, Annie (James) Guinn; brothers, Herman, George Jr., Grady, and a host of other relatives and friends. Arrangements were made by McCabe Funeral Home, Farmington Hills. MCGHEE - Charles G. McGhee - Services were held at Swanson Funeral Home May 27 for Charles G. McGhee. Mr. McGhee, 89, died May 22. Born April 27, 1908, Mr. McGhee was a member of AA for 40 years. He is survived by his children, Clarence L. McGhee and Jacquelyne R. Packer; granddaughter, Monique McGhee; great-grandsons Kye McGhee and Marcus Thurston and many others. Interment was at Detroit Memorial Park. PERRY - Keith L. Perry - Services were held for Keith Lorenzo Perry, May 17 at Exodus Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. J. J. Perry officiating. Mr. Perry was 35 when he died May 10. Mr. Perry --- or Scrooge, as he was known --- was born Aug. 26, 1961 in Centreville, Ala. to Rev. Joseph J. and Dorothy Perry. The family moved to Detroit in April of 1965 where Mr. Perry was educated in Detroit public schools. Mr. Perry, who loved to sing, was baptized in his father's church, Exodus Missionary Baptist Church, Oct. 17, 1971, and served on the Youth Usher Board, Youth and Young Adult Choir, Workshop Choir and Deacon Ministry and was co-chairman of the Trustee Ministry. He married Carolyn Robertson Nov. 5, 1988. Mr. Perry is survived by his wife; daughter, Natassia; father; mother; brothers, Joseph Jr., Kenneth; sisters, Andrea M. Davis, Sherron O. Perry and a host of other relatives and friends. Interment was at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Swanson Funeral Home, Inc. SIMPSON - Lula Simpson - Services for Lula M. Simpson were held July 19, at The Love Baptist church. Rev. Herbert B. Robinson officiated. Mrs. Simpson, 64, died July 12. Born Dec. 13, 1932, Mrs. Simpson graduated from Pershing High School. She married Thomas Simpson in 1959. She retired from Arrow Uniform Company as an embroider operator. She was also a co-founder of the Roselawn Block Club. She was a member of the True Love Baptist Church choir. Mrs. Simpson is survived by her husband, Thomas; stepson, Woodruff; sister-in-law, Mable Bingham; nieces, Patricia, Phyliss and Roslyn (Undra); nephews, Kevin and Kenneth (Lisa); two step grandchildren; two great step grandchildren; four great nieces; four great nephews; an aunt, Ella Anderson; and a host of other relatives. Arrangements were made by Thompson Funeral Home Inc. Interment was at Grand Lawn Cemetery. WOODLAND - Dixie Woodland - Services for Mr. Dixie Woodland were held July 9, at the Greater Grace Temple with District Elder Charles H. Ellis III officiating. Mr. Woodland died July 3 in Veterans Hospital. Born March 14, 1912, Mr. Woodland was the fifth of eight children born to Dixie and Louise Woodland in Fayette County, Tennessee. He attended Fayette County Training School in Sommerville, Tennessee, and later became a member of the Young Black Tennessee Farmers Association. He was a sergeant in the United States Army in World War II. After leaving military service, Dixie moved to Detroit, where he attended and graduated from the Michigan Barber College in 1947. He was the proprietor of Woody's Barber Shop on Woodrow Wilson and Tyler for many years. He also worked at Chrysler in Highland Park and retired in 1972. He is survived by his devoted wife, Jelema; a daughter, Alberta (Dr. Jeff Richburg); sons Calvin (Jackie), and Treneir (Cathryn); brothers, Dave and Thomas (Carrie); sisters, Mary Lou and Ruth; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Interment was at Elmwood Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Ellis Memorial Funeral Home. |
