I have been tracing my family history since November 1994 in Greensville County and Newport News Virginia, and Warren, Granville, Vance, and Halifax counties in North Carolina.

I am descended from Solomon Koonce who was born around 1822 in North Carolina. He was a slave on a farm in Haywood and Crockett County, Tennessee. I am also descended from Napoleon Cotten. He was born in Mississippi around 1857 and lived in Amite and Pike, County. His mother was Winnie Dear. Napoleon married Mary Saunders of Mississippi. My grandmother Lula Alexander is a descendant of John and Catherine Alexander of Lincoln and Pike County, Mississippi

This ongoing project is a collection of African American slave names that were printed in west Tennessee newspapers before 1865. These men, women and children were advertised as runaway slaves or listed as property for sale.

The first known existing photograph of me was taken at 6 weeks. I know that because my mother wrote “Paula, 6 weeks old, Isn’t she cute” on the back. However, the reality is that most of my family pictures are not identified because no ever took a few minutes to pencil in the names on the back. With three members of my parent's generation still left, I decided its time for me to identify and memorialize the people and stories I know for future generations to come. Thus, this blog.

In 1984, a professor at Rutgers University stumbled upon a trove of historic data in a courthouse in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana. Researchers typically use the records of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands (commonly referred to as the "Freedmen's Bureau") to study either individuals or African-American communities during Reconstruction. Some records predate the establishment of the Freedmen's Bureau on March 3, 1865. In fact, many of the relief programs carried out by the Bureau have their roots in the "pre-Bureau." Pre-Bureau is a modern term used to refer to the military's efforts to address the needs of the wartime African American refugee community.

My family tree sprouts from four different branches, Ghyll, Hinson, Sobers and Williams. For the record, at least three of the family names, Ghyll, Hinson and Sobers, are of British origin. Joseph Hairston Duff has been doing geneology research since "Roots II" aired in 1977. He was deeply inspired by Alex Haley's successful quest to find his African Ancestors. Essay by Robert Grooms discussing Black slave owners before the civil war. Author states "In the rare instances when the ownership of slaves by free Negroes is acknowledged in the history books, justification centers on the claim that black slave masters were simply individuals who purchased the freedom of a spouse or child from a white slaveholder and had been unable to legally manumit them. Although this did indeed happen at times, it is a misrepresentation of the majority of instances, one which is debunked by records of the period on blacks who owned slaves."

From the colonial days of New Orleans to the present time, a unique group of people has contributed to the most European city in America. They were the "Gens de Couleur Libres", the Free People of Color. Today, commonly known as "Creoles" or "Creoles of Color", their descendants live in all parts of the country.

The name "Dunkerhook" refers to a small section of suburban Paramus, New Jersey reputed to be the former site of a "slave community." According to local histories and an historic marker at the site, Dunkerhook was once home to a population of African Americans, many or all of whom were slaves, as well as a "slave school" and "slave church." However, primary historic documentation establishes that Dunkerhook was populated not by slaves, but rather primarily by free African Americans.

During the Civil War, Union-occupied Roanoke Island, which lies between the North Carolina mainland and the barrier islands known as the Outer Banks, became home to thousands of former slaves. This site presents an introduction to the colony and the colonial experiment that was conducted there. It also features some primary sources, maps, and projects for students.
